Tricks Train Your Voice

No matter what style of singing you prefer the basic voice training concepts are the same. You might like to swing, or rock or croon or even rap but the same approach to training your voice still applies.

One of the most important things for a singer is breath control. To create the best platform for proper breathing you must stand up straight and balanced. This will create the room that your diaphragm needs so you can control your airflow down low from the diaphragm.

You might have a naturally great sounding voice but you will never achieve your singing potential if you do not learn proper breathing technique. You will need great breath control to become a great singer. This can only be achieved by learning to fill your body with air from the diaphragm. So instead of pulling your diaphragm up to support your lungs you should relax your diaphragm and let it fill with air. Once you can do this regularly you will have much better vocal control, tone, agility and stamina.

There is a technique called energized phonation that you should try to master. Basically, this consists of learning to control the exhaling of your air into sound. At this point you are not working on pitch or tone, just sound and air. Try and let out a steady hiss over a period of time without changing the hiss at all. Once you have mastered this move onto buzzing your lips to make sound and again master this technique. You will be learning to control your breath as it leaves your body.

Breath Control in Vocal Classes

There are some people who don’t realize that too much air can distort the singing impact. Similarly your vocal coach singing can train you to sing well into the soprano range even if you are a tenor by helping you to control when you cut off air flow while singing. As any masterly vocal coach knows most singers can stretch their voices far more than they usually do. The trick is to teach them during vocal classes to how to achieve volume. It is done by increasing resonance rather than by pushing more air.

One of the biggest no-nos if you intend to be a singer is drinking too much coffee or alcohol. This is because the blood vessels constrict when you imbibe alcohol or drink coffee. This shrinkage diminishes the amount of oxygen in the blood which can leave you unable to sing long notes or stretch a tune to give it an echoing effect. It can also roughen the texture of the voice.

Some Basic Rules of Singing

  • Prepare your mind:

Multitasking is good, but not when you are singing. While you are practising, do not get engaged into or carried away by any other activities. All you have to do is focus on the music without any distractions and practise your technique.

  • Prepare your body:

While you are practising or performing, your face should not be frozen. It is necessary to stretch the muscles of your shoulders, neck, legs and back. The frozen expression is a sign of tension and nervousness. So, feel free and keep your body flexible.

  • Learn to manage the breath support:

Take a full breadth before you start signing so that you do not hold your breath into your throat or neck muscles. Hold your breath to the diaphragm and ribs so that you can hold them to enhance your tone.

  • Stand with erect posture:

The way you stand will affect your performance. Standing erect with chin up will boost up your confidence and helps you to perform better. These are a few food habits:

  • Do not consume dairy products before you perform:

The dairy products produce phlegm which can ruin your high notes. So, it is advisable not to have milk, cheese, butter or any other dairy products, at least a few hours before your performance.

  • Bananas will help controlling nerves:

Bananas are full of magnesium and potassium which help you to give your best, as you can sing without trembling or sweating. If you are one of those several banana haters, you can attack on apricot and spinach, as they are magnesium rich too.

  • 8 glasses of water every day is a must:

There can hardly be anyone who is not aware of the benefits of water. It is anyways beneficial to drink water and stay hydrated for the non singers as well. However, the singers should definitely have water 8 times a day to keep their vocal folds hydrated.

  • Caffeinated beverages are enemies:

Caffeine is one thing that dehydrates and damages your vocal folds. So, it is strictly ‘No’ to consume caffeine; especially for the opera singers.

All about Pitch Problems

There are also ear training exercises that will help the student recognize the sounds and sensations of pitch when it is both incorrect and correct. Once the student’s technique shows signs of improvement and he or she becomes more certain in his or her ability to hear and reproduce musical pitches the more confident and comfortable they will become with their singing voice. In fact in many cases, individuals who have pronounced themselves tone deaf go on to establish professional singing careers.

It is nearly impossible for a singer to improve his or her pitch without the assistance of a competent voice instructor who has the knowledge and experience to address pitch inaccuracies, diagnose their causes and then present solutions that work, including some ear training and vocal technique instruction. For problems that are related to a lack of training or improper training, the voice and the ear can still be taught to work as a team in a more coordinated fashion.

Tone is one of the things that too often get overlooked whenever an individual is trying to improve pitch. In some instances a singer’s tone may be too bright, meaning there’s an over emphasis on upper harmonic partials, formats or the tone is too dark, lacking in upper partials/overtones. This may cause the singer’s tone to “clash” with the tone of the accompanying musical instrument, making it more difficult to hear the fundamental pitch of the tone. If the instructor is able to help the singer change how he or she shapes the vocal tract and balances the tone he or she will have more success in matching the pitch of the accompanying instrument.

Some accompanying instruments may produce tones and vibrato that do no blend will with the singer’s voice or may throw the singer off. It is always advisable to choose an accompanying instrument that most closely matches an individual’s own singing tone. A piano is almost always ideal for most individuals, while others may have better success an acoustic guitar, for example.

When just beginning to train the ear to distinguish between different musical notes, it is wise to use a comfortable and “safe” pitch as this can eliminate some of the nervousness and stress that the singer might be feeling. In addition, a struggling singer will often times find it easier to hear and produce the desired pitch if they match or blend their voice with a singer whose pitch accuracy is precise and who has similar tonal qualities and vocal weights.

Many times playing the accompanying instrument loudly will help the student to hear the notes and the overtones of the instrument better. The loudness of the instrument may also help them feel less self-conscious about being heard, thus becoming more relaxed.

When helping an individual student to improve pitch though ear training, a competent instructor will avoid playing chords whenever possible. In fact it is best to keep it simple and just play the sung notes of the lead melody one note at a time. Using a piano as the accompanying instrument is recommended because the student can clearly hear the note and then sing it while the piano is resonating. This allows the student to listen to how the ring of his or her tone matches and is compatible with that of the piano. If it “clashes” with the instrument, the instructor will need to help him or her balance their tone. Once this is accomplished, try playing the same note again and have him or her sing back that note while the piano’s sound is fading. The next step is to have the student sing back that same pitch after the piano has ceased making the sound. This will allow the student to “hear and repeat” as opposed to requiring the note to be sung simultaneously with the sound.

Once the student begins to match the pitch correctly more often, the instructor can begin adding the simplest major chord structure and have the student sing the note repeatedly. Once the pitch is matched correctly, the instructor should softly play the appropriate chord. Sometimes the other pitches in the chord will throw the student off pitch. Since this is a normal occurrence, the instructor should not let the student become discouraged. In fact the instructor should remind the student that just by singing more their technique will improve, their comfort and confidence level will improve, which in turn will improve their pitch.
